Do you use electric dental handpieces? When an air driven handpiece is not performing well, the dental practitioner will know to send the handpiece for repair. It can be a bad bur, or a worn gear in the handpiece. With electric handpiece the warning is different. If the electric handpiece gets clogged, the electric motor will send more power to the handpiece head in order to maintain its performance. That will generate rapid heat which can burn the patients.
If you do, make sure that you maintain it exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The manufacturer should tell you the appropriate scheduled maintenance for your electric handpiece based on the actual use of your electric handpiece. Allow proper training of your help personal to clean the handpieces. Log onto a web base program where you can enter the maintenance and routine service for each handpiece you use. Use only good drills and burs. Make sure they are not warned out. Use only highly maintained electric dental handpieces.
